The cloud migration process with AWS consists of three main phases: Assess, Mobilize, and Migrate.

During the Assessphase, we begin by assessing the existing IT infrastructure to understand the organization’s starting point and define the business objectives of the migration. AWS provides tools such as Migration Evaluator, which offers a projection of the total cost of ownership (TCO) based on current resource usage, and AWS Migration Hub, which helps identify the most suitable EC2 instances for running workloads on AWS. To support strategic planning, the Cloud Economics Center enables you to build a solid business case—which is also useful for the board of directors—while the guides and best practices from AWS Prescriptive Guidance offer structured support to effectively navigate the migration process.
The Mobilize phase is dedicated to the operational preparation for the migration. During this phase, a detailed plan is developed, addressing any organizational gaps and designing the target cloud environment by creating a landing zone, while ensuring security and compliance. A key part of the process is application analysis, which helps identify the most suitable strategy from among the seven most common options (reposition, rehost, rearchitect, repurchase, retire, or retain). Tools such as the AWS Application Discovery Service allow you to gather detailed information on application dependencies, facilitating decision-making. Additionally, AWS offers solutions for monitoring and governance through AWS Control Tower, which automates the configuration of cloud environments, and AWS Landing Zone, ideal for those with more customized needs.
During the Migrate & Modernize, applications are actually migrated and optimized for the cloud. AWS Migration Hub serves as the central hub for coordinating the process and monitoring the status of migrations, which can be carried out using different approaches depending on your needs. AWS Application Migration Service (MGN) enables the automated rehosting of a large number of servers, while AWS Server Migration Service allows you to transfer workloads without installing agents. For VMware-based virtualized environments, VMware Cloud on AWS simplifies the transition while maintaining consistent operations with on-premises infrastructure. During the modernization phase, Migration Hub Refactor Spaces helps transform applications into microservices gradually, reducing business risks. Finally, for database migration, AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) ensures a smooth transition to a new platform without disrupting the operation of the applications that rely on it.
