By completing the acquisition of Cloud.com and its CloudStack platform, Citrix reaffirmed its commitment to open source that was demonstrated by its support of the OpenStack infrastructure developed by Rackspace. Citrix has also made it clear that it wants to work on CloudStack technology to deliver the cloud at scale, such as those built by Cloud.com for companies like Zynga and GoDaddy.com. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
\nCloudStack and OpenStack have been developed in parallel, and Citrix says it has identified areas where the two can be collaborative, as they become increasingly compatible. The company also said it will continue to support Project Olympus, which was created to be a tested and certified version of OpenStack.
\nCloud.com has developed about 60 large Clouds in the United States, Asia and Indonesia, most of which are based on XenServer. In an effort to increase this number, Citrix is now offering Cloudmaster Webinars to educate customers on the principles and concepts of the next generation of Cloud Computing. It will also offer a two-day “Build-a-Cloud Workshop.”
\nCitrix also announced the creation of a cloud platform product group led by VMLogix’s former CEO, Sameer Dholakia, who is vice president of the group and general manager of the new group. CEO Sheng Liang of Cloud.com will report directly to him, continue to lead the design, architecture, and technology of the CloudStack product line.
