Compellent storage virtualization: Live Volume

It is worth mentioning the storage virtualization solutions that Compellent, a US company based in Minnesota that works in the field of storage solutions of considerable thickness, has arrived.

Acquired by Dell for $960 million in December 2010.

We would like to point out:

Live Volume

It’s like a storage hypervisor, a volume mapped from two arrays at the same time. This allows volumes to be moved between systems with a view to high availability and continuous access to data. The data is not physically tied to any particular arrary or particular datacenter. Instead, volumes can be accessed and/or shared from different locations, making Live Volume a key enabler for virtualization and the cloud.

Advantages of Live Volume:

OnDemand WorkLoad Distribuition:
In our opinion, this is a feature that brings enormous progress and innovation in many areas.
It allows users to split the workload between arrays and download I/O from one storage system to another, without disruption to applications.
The workload is transparently distributed across arrays, automatically balancing I/O traffic and storage utilization to increase application performance with low latency. Applications continue to function as usual during the volume migration process, and workload is transferred from a
system to another without impacting access to data. All this without any impact on server resources, to provide the best configuration for datacenter performance.
